Founded in 1998 as a hydrographic consultancy, Periplus has matured into a respected centre of subsea data expertise.

Around 25 staff are based in our Amsterdam office. Many more freelancers work on projects around the world.

We developed software tools to help our team of marine archaeologists, geologists, hydrographic surveyors and GIS specialists optimise the storage, processing, analysis and visualisation of data. GRIDit, our subsea data management platform, emerged from this process, and is now widely used by subsea operators across northwest Europe.

Experience is our tool

We consult on hydrographic, geophysical and archaeological projects. We provide construction support for the energy industry (including offshore wind, floating solar, oil and gas and floating solar), processing hydrographic and geophysical data, and providing GRIDit, our subsea data management platform.

Our clients include major energy companies, hydrographic survey companies, Rijkswaterstaat (Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment) and various other governmental organizations.

We are also involved in environmental projects, including REMARCO, a Europe-wide project to combat ocean pollution and protect marine life.

History

After Periplus started as a sole proprietorship from 1998, Giel Menijn and Bart van Mierlo jointly founded Periplus Holding in 2004. At the same time the subsidiaries Periplus Resources and Periplus Consultancy started. Periplus Archeomare was established a year later.

The hydrographic expertise of Giel and the geophysical knowledge of Bart coupled with the experience from his outsourcing company turned out to be the perfect combination to put Periplus on the map as a hydrographic consultancy firm.

Meanwhile Periplus has grown into a mature company with about 25 employees. Periplus offers solutions in the maritime sector in the area of hydrographic data management, the development of software applications, data processing, maritime archaeological services and secondment specialists for on-site support.

Company Name

PERIPLUS is an historic term that refers to the Ancient Greek word 'περίπλους' (periplous), a compound of the words 'περί ' (perí, “around”) and 'πλέω' (pléō, “I sail”).

A periplus is a manuscript that listed ports and other coastal landmarks in order of their appearance on the horizon and with approximate distances in between. Phoenicians, Greek and Romans used a periplus to navigate along a shore. These manuscripts are believed to be the first navigational charts ever produced.
