Discovery of shipwreck graveyard in IJsselmeer

Periplus Archeomare executed an archaeological investigation for a new service port south of the former island of Urk in the IJsselmeer.

During the survey, a shipwreck graveyard of fishing vessels was discovered and further investigated with divers.

It is likely that the vessels were sunken intentionally shortly after the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, when fishing on the Zuiderzee was decimated. Further archival research might reveal what has happened.
