REMARCO works towards cleaner, safer marine environment

Decades of seawater exposure have caused World War-era munitions to degrade, leaking toxic and carcinogenic compounds into our oceans. These pollutants threaten marine life, food safety and human health while increasing the risk of uncontrolled explosions.

The Periplus Archeomare team of maritime archaeologists is experienced in locating and cataloging such underwater objects. Our team is contributing to the EU-sponsored REMARCO project, which assesses, monitors and mitigates the risks posed by underwater munitions.

REMARCO is collaborating with authorities and industries in the North Sea region to enhance risk management and develop automated solutions for monitoring and remediation.

Because this project requires collaboration between different academic institutions, authorities and industries, Periplus Group's team of software developers has been commissioned to create a version of GRIDit that allows permission-based data sharing. This allows professionals from a range of different institutions to collaborate while maintaining security, privacy and data ownership.
