Past
Twenty years ago, on a summer day, Giel Menijn and Bart van Mierlo envisioned turning their shared passion for the maritime industry into a serious enterprise. With extensive experience in the offshore industry, they saw an opportunity to enter a niche market. Periplus Holding was officially established in October 2004, along with its subsidiaries Periplus Resources and Periplus Consultancy. The following year, Periplus Archeomare was launched.
With Giel’s hydrographic expertise and Bart’s geophysical knowledge, Periplus Group quickly positioned itself as a distinctive hydrographic consultancy. In 2010, Giel took his own path, and since then, Periplus has not only supported and guided offshore operators but also led major projects, including the port ENC production for Rijkswaterstaat, the excavation of a shipwreck in Germany, and numerous archaeological analyses for offshore wind farm construction.
Present
Today, Periplus offers a broad array of services across the maritime sector, from hydrographic data management, software development, and data processing to maritime archaeology and specialist staffing. We are the market leader in maritime archaeology in the Netherlands and experts in object detection and prehistoric landscape research.
With the launch of Periplus Solutions in 2024, we have expanded our focus to software development and subsea data management for the offshore sector. This division includes innovative, customized solutions such as SonarReg (now available at https://onderwaterobjecten.rws.nl/) and our in-house developed Gridit software platform (www.gridit.nl). Through these offerings, we combine our geographic, hydrographic, and archaeological expertise to provide clients with up-to-date information, control over their subsea data, and transparent collaboration.
Future
Periplus Group aims to play a leading role in unlocking underwater data and transforming it into accessible, actionable information. Our goal is not only to visualize this data but to leverage it to support our clients with the expertise and experience of our consultants.
We see significant opportunities in the European offshore wind industry, which is growing rapidly and benefits from close collaboration across various stakeholders. By sharing data and research findings, as encouraged by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, we aim to make valuable contributions to this sector.
The integration of advanced data analysis and visualization tools will lead to faster decision-making and more efficient wind farm development processes. Geo-viewers, combining as-built and inspection data, are becoming essential for asset management and early risk identification.
