Client Spotlight: Porthos

Collaboration with Porthos and Expload

Periplus is thrilled to highlight our work with Porthos CO2 Transport & Storage and our collaboration with Expload. Since 2020, we've been integral in the permit process for Porthos, offering expertise in Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and Underwater Archaeology. Our findings have been compiled and shared with the Porthos team via GR:Dit.

Pioneering Environmental Innovation

Porthos, the Port of Rotterdam's CO₂ Transport Hub and Offshore Storage initiative, is leading the charge in environmental innovation. Its goal is to capture CO2 from the Port of Rotterdam's industrial sector and store it in depleted North Sea gas fields. The project, which made its final investment decision in October 2023, includes a comprehensive pipeline network, a CO2 compression facility, and offshore storage deep beneath the sea bed, set to start construction in 2024 and become operational by 2026. With a capacity to store around 37 million tons of CO2 over 15 years, Porthos is poised to make a significant dent in regional carbon emissions.

An Inclusive Model for CO2 Storage

A key feature of Porthos is its inclusive model, which allows for CO2 storage from a variety of companies, particularly targeting traditional hydrogen production plants to abate the largest industrial CO2 producers in the area. In December 2021, industry giants such as Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil, and Shell committed to using Porthos for CO2 transport and storage, planning to capture 2.5 million tons of CO2 annually from their Rotterdam operations to foster a greener future.

Periplus's Role in Supporting Porthos

Periplus has been pivotal in providing archaeological consultancy, GIS services, and GR:Dit software support to Porthos since 2020. GR:Dit, an interactive web-based mapping tool, efficiently manages underwater data, offering robust features for analysis, visualization, and sharing, thereby enhancing stakeholder collaboration and ensuring timely, precise data for informed decision-making. This platform, which is linked to Expload’s UXO platform called LINX, enables easy access to archaeological and UXO information, streamlines the sharing of survey findings during construction, and supports effective real-time communication within the team.

Future Collaborations and Impact

With GR:Dit's capabilities for burial assessments and as a repository for future offshore survey data, Periplus is poised to continue supporting Porthos post-construction, delivering cost and time efficiencies. GR:Dit's flexibility and customizability make it an exemplary tool for developing new CO2 transport infrastructures globally. Together with Expload, Periplus is honoured to contribute to this pivotal shift towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
