Shipwreck Buiten IJ, The Netherlands - 2007

ImageOn the 16th of May 2007 during dredging activities on the Buiten IJ near Amsterdam a shipwreck was found. It was advised to start with dive inspections right away. At the same time multibeamdata from the insurvey was analysed to determine the nature of the location.

The wreck was located at a depth of 4,8m and was mapped onboard the surveyvessel through communication with the diver. During the dive investigation wood was taken from the wrecksite, to date the wreck. Altogether the investigation resulted in the conclusion that this was a 16th century so called watership.

These waterships were used for fishing, transport of fish and are also associeted with towage services. They're characterized by a built-in fishbin, in which fish could be stored. The space in front of this fishbin was used as workspace and the behind it as livingspace.

Because this is an exceptional find and in situ conservation isn't an option, it's been advised to excavate and remove the wreckage.

Periplus Archeomare BV executed these investigations in coorperation with ADC Maritiem.
